Dr. Emily Kate Avakian
Literary Genres
Dr. Avakian earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Montana where she focused on Native American Studies and Sociology. As an undergraduate student, Ms. Avakian focused her research on diversity issues within higher education. From there, she earned her Master’s in Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education from the University of Virginia. She earned her Doctorate at Liberty University in Education Administration: Educational Leadership.
Dr. Avakian is a native of Charlottesville and a graduate of Renaissance School and aims to utilize her education to serve her Native American community. Outside of work and school, Emily serves on the board of directors for the ALMA-nominated Farhang School in Iran, a school that provides education to Afghan refugees living in Iran.
In her spare time, Dr. Avakian enjoys writing and has published numerous articles and poems in literary journals and magazines. In the summer of 2022, Emily’s most recent creative endeavor, A Secret Ingredient, was produced in Baltimore through Strand Theater Company and APAC. The play highlighted issues of immigration and identity among Armenian youth.
