RENAISSANCE SCHOOL CELEBRATES 25TH YEAR WITH CAMPUS EXPANSION
Renaissance School, Charlottesville’s college preparatory school for academically and artistically advanced high school students, is celebrating 25 years with a campus expansion project.
Founded in 1999, Renaissance School began on the downtown mall in a small space above the Men and Boys Shop. Nine years later, the school moved to its current location on historic Court Square’s East Jefferson Street, where they occupy three interconnected buildings.
Head of School, Dr. Johnson, pointed to focused programmatic growth, community partnerships, and talented faculty and staff as major contributors to the school’s increased enrollment over the years. Today, Renaissance School is the highest ranked high school for the arts in the state of Virginia, and is in the top 13% nationally (Niche, 2023).
Additionally, Renaissance School’s balanced program of arts, sciences, and humanities, is evident in their commitment to innovative curriculum including such courses as synthetic biology, Micro MBA, Native American History, Portfolio, Music Theory, and two years of independent research.
In addition to increased classroom space for courses in the humanities, this expansion will also include a newly established Community Collaboration Center and will pave the way toward the school’s next growth phase, which will focus on interdisciplinary programs connecting engineering design, computer science, and the arts.
Dr. Johnson notes, “This is such an exciting moment in our school’s history and the timing couldn’t be more perfect as we embrace 25 years of academic and artistic excellence.”
